Buying a second-hand eFoil: what to check

A used eFoil can save you thousands of euros. A rider's question about an ex-school board shows nicely what to look out for.

A new eFoil easily costs six thousand euros or more. No wonder many people look at used ones. A recent question from a rider on Reddit shows nicely what to look out for.

The offer: a school board for half the price

One rider was considering a Waydoo EVO LITE 90L from an eFoil school. Six months of use, an 1800 Wh battery, 1.5 years of warranty left, a fast charger and a new remote cable. Price: around €3,200, versus about €6,100 new. His doubt: school boards are used intensively. Will that cause problems later, and how well does the warranty work in practice?

Pay special attention to the battery

The battery is one of the most expensive parts of an eFoil, and how it has been used and stored makes a difference. So ask about it carefully, and check that the battery warranty is still valid.

Checklist for a second-hand eFoil

  • Ask about the battery: how old, how many charges, how was it stored off-season?
  • Check the warranty: is it still valid, and does it transfer to you as the new owner?
  • Test ride it: check that the power stays constant and the battery doesn’t suddenly drain fast.
  • Look for damage: dents or cracks in the board, and play at the mast.
  • Ask for an invoice: also handy for registration with the Dutch RDW.
  • Preferably buy through a dealer or school that knows the board and can offer service. See the Dutch shops.
